On 19 September, at the meeting of the United Nations Security Council, the Lithuanian permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Raimonda Murmokaitė expressed Lithuania’s support for the new government of Iraq and underlined that it had to remain inclusive and represent the interests of all the groups and components of the society.

A united and democratic Iraq within the internationally recognised borders, with a viable, inclusive and representative government where the interests of all social, political, religious and ethnic groups of the society are taken into account, is the only antidote to the spread of murderous radical extremism, which is threatening the very existence of Iraq, stated the Lithuanian Representative at the meeting.

20/09/2014  At UN Security Council Lithuania urged not to politicise independent investigation into downing of MH17

At September 19 meeting of the United Nations Security Council Lithuanian Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Raimonda Murmokaitė urged to respect the memory of the victims of the catastrophe of MH17 and condemned any attempts to influence or interfere with the independent investigation carried out by the Dutch Safety Board.

“The Resolution of the United Nations Security Council on the investigation into the Malaysian Airlines plane MH17 catastrophe obliges that the independent investigation into this catastrophe should be carried out, the persons responsible for it should be identified and brought to justice. It is necessary to ensure that this Resolution should be implemented; this is our duty to the families of the victims”, stated Ambassador Raimonda Murmokaitė at the meeting.

19/09/2014  Statement by Lithuania at the UN Security Council debate on the situation in Iraq

I thank the Secretary of State John Kerry for convening this critical meeting. Let me also welcome Iraq’s Foreign minister Al-Jaafari and thank SRSG Nickolay Mladenov for his insightful briefing and dedicated work.

A united and democratic Iraq within the internationally recognized borders, with a viable, inclusive, and representative government, where the interests of all the groups and components of the society are taken into account, is the only antidote to the spread of murderous radical extremism, which is threatening the very existence of Iraq as we know.

19/09/2014  Lithuania's staement at the UN Security Council meeting on Ukraine

Check against delivery

During the Security Council trip in August this year many of us had an opportunity to see the improvised memorial at the Schiphol airport dedicated to the victims of MH17. No one who has seen the place, with its messages of grief, longing, and love, can ever forget the emotion.

I would like to take this opportunity to once again express my country’s heartfelt condolences to the families in The Netherlands, Malaysia, Australia, Indonesia, United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium, Philippines, New Zealand and Canada who lost their loved ones in the downing of MH17.

To quote The Netherlands Prime Minister, "We owe it to the victims’ next of kin to do everything in our power .... to achieve clarity about the circumstances of this tragedy, and to bring those responsible to justice."
