On 18 September in New York, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius attended side events of the United Nations General Assembly on reforms of the UN.

“The modern world is much different from the one in which the United Nations started its activities more than seven decades ago. Therefore, it’s high time we made some changes. The activities of the United Nations have to be more transparent, effective, and results-oriented. Thus Lithuania supports the reform initiatives launched by the UN Secretary-General António Guterres and is ready to take an active part in the reform process,” said Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Linkevičius.

Lithuania, together with other 128 states, joined the U.S.-initiated political declaration that supports the UN Secretary-General’s initiative to reform this organisation. Guterres has submitted to the member states proposals for three areas of reform: peace and security, development, and governance.

Lithuania actively supports the Secretary-General’s initiative to address and prevent sexual abuse of indigenous peoples by UN peacekeeping forces and has signed a voluntary political agreement, committing itself to preventing sexual violence and exploitation in peace operations, as well as to ensuring that guilty persons are held accountable. The President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė joined other world leaders, who have supported the UN Secretary General on this issue.
